Dental disease is one of the most common painful conditions seen in veterinary clinics. Once teeth have experienced a certain amount of chronic disease a general anaesthetic is required in a hospital setting to assess damage, xrays roots, extract any teeth that are above a certain level of disease and scale and polish remaining teeth. The goal is to prevent dental disease developing to begin with.
Preventative oral care such as daily brushing, dental food, dental chews and food additives can help minimise plaque and calculus accumulation to prevent serious dental disease from developing. It cannot reverse serious disease once it has developed.
