Ear Cleaner
Otoflush ear cleaner is the safest ear cleaner on the market
Instructions: Squirt a small amount down the ear canal, rub the ear canal gently to break up ear wax and use soft swab or makeup pad to wipe out
Frequency depends on the breed and anatomy of ears, I typically recommend cleaning once every 2 months or less if not needed.
Ears should not be cleaned more frequently than every 2 weeks unless directed by your veterinarian. If your dog/cat's ears are building up debris quicker than 2 weeks, are itchy, smelly or painful click here to book an appointment
Drying Ear Drops for Swimmers
Dogs who swim regularly can increase the frequency of ear infections as water enters the ear canal
Aqua ear drops are alcohol based drying ear drops which help evaporate trapped water
Instructions: Instill in both ears once after swimming. Do not use more frequently than twice a week
These drops are a preventative for healthy ears only and should not be used in dogs with active ear infections or ruptured ear drums. If your dog's ears are itchy, smelly or painful or they have suffered numerous or severe ear infections in the past which may have affected ear drum patency click here to book an appointment.
Food Allergies Causing Ear Infections
In a minority of dogs and cats food allergies can cause ear infections which typically recur quickly after treatment and occur year round. To rule out food as a cause of ear issues a food elimination diet must be completed
This food should be fed exclusively. No other food - no treats, no bones, no table scraps, no other biscuits or dog food
Skin requires 8 weeks on a food trial before results are seen
Ear Infection Treatment
Dogs or cats who have excessive ear wax, itchy, smelly or painful ears, are shaking their head or scratching their ears require a veterinary visit. Medicated ear drops are dispensed based on cytology of the ears (microscopic examination of bacteria, yeast and inflammatory cells) and otoscopic examination (looking down the ears to inspect the ear drum, the ear canal and look for foreign bodies such as grass seeds)
Allergy control with Apoquel, Cytopoint, Atopica, oral steroids, food trials or maintenance steroid ear drops may be recommended if allergies are suspected as an underlying cause for persistent or recurrent ear infections
