Chronic kidney disease is one of the common diseases seen in elderly cats. Dogs develop kidney disease less frequently than cats, when detected the disease can have a more rapid progression.Â
Kidneys have a limited ability to heal and regenerate, once kidney disease has been detected the main goal is slowing the progression of further damage. Renal foods have specifically balanced micro and macronutrients formulated to minimise the work the kidneys have to do, support renal function and maintain body condition. Feeding the diet consistently and early in the disease process has been proven to be the single most important lifestyle factor found to lengthen and improve quality of life in cats and dogs with kidney disease.
Kidney disease is diagnosed via blood and urine tests with a vet. Dogs and cats diagnosed with chronic kidney disease should be fed a diet consisting of 80-100% of a kidney support food, have free access to water at all times and have regular check ups and blood test monitoring at the vets.Â

How To Transition To Kidney Support Food
Kidney support food should be introduced slowly, over 1 - 2 weeks, to ensure your pet does not develop an aversion to it. Do not begin introducing kidney foods unless your pet is currently feeling well. Begin by mixing <25% of the kidney food with your pets regular food. Gradually increase the percentage over 7 - 14 days until the food is completely transitioned.Â
I recommend trying Hill's K/D first and Royal Canin Renal second if you pet will not eat Hills
